A White House meeting on the debt ceiling broke up Tuesday with no agreement between President Joe Biden and GOP congressional leaders, leaving the two sides at an impasse with just two weeks to go before the U.S. risks hitting the debt ceiling for the first time.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy said after the meeting that the “structure” of the negotiations had improved, and that Biden has agreed to designate someone to represent the White House in direct talks with McCarthy’s team.
Still McCarthy added, “It’s unfortunate we are where we are.” McCarthy said that Republicans and Democrats remain far apart on a potential deal, but that he believes it’s still possible to get to an agreement by the end of the week.
